An IRS federal tax lien is a legal claim that the IRS has to your property to satisfy a tax debt. This means that the IRS can seize and sell your property to pay off your debt, even if you are still making payments.


If you have an IRS federal tax lien, it is important to take steps to get it released as soon as possible. A tax lien can have a negative impact on your credit score and make it difficult to get a loan or mortgage.


Here are three ways to get an IRS federal tax lien released:


1. Pay your tax debt in full

The best way to get an IRS federal tax lien released is to pay your tax debt in full. Once you have paid your debt, the IRS will release the lien within 30 days.

If you cannot afford to pay your debt in full, you may be able to set up a payment plan with the IRS. The IRS will release the lien once you have paid off your debt under the payment plan.


2. Get a discharge of lien

A discharge of lien is a formal document that releases the IRS's claim to your property. You may be eligible for a discharge of lien if:

  • You have paid your tax debt in full.

  • You have entered into a payment plan with the IRS and are making regular payments.

  • You have financial hardship and cannot afford to pay your tax debt.

3. Get a subordination of lien

A subordination of lien allows another creditor to move ahead of the IRS in line to collect on a debt. This means that the other creditor can seize and sell your property to satisfy their debt before the IRS can.

You may be able to get a subordination of lien if you need to get a loan or mortgage. To get a subordination of lien, you will need to contact the IRS and negotiate with a revenue officer.
